Early Life
The birthplace of Esteban Alvarado Brown is Siquirres, Costa Rica. Thus, having a Costarian nationality Before joining the youth team at Saprissa, Esteban started his football career at Santos de Guapiles. This Costa Rican star spent his growing days playing football with Joel Campbell, who is also a famous player now. Esteban shared a strong bond with him.
Personal Life
Esteban Alvarado is a very short-tempered and controversial figure. He was found guilty of attacking his fan on the field during a match. This violent misconduct took him out of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. He was also accused by his girlfriend, Marcela Juarez Castillo, of domestic violence. However, two months later, the charges against him were dropped. While growing up in Costa Rica, he played with Joel Campbell as a striker before switching his position to become goalkeeper at fourteen.
College Career
Alvarado started his academic career at Santos de Guapiles. Then he moved to Saprissa. Alvarado made his Saprissa debut against Municipal Liberia, winning 3-1. He made four appearances for the club and helped the club win the league.
Professional Career
At the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup, Alvarado was named the best goalkeeper of the tournament. He made his national team debut in an August 2010 friendly match against Paraguay. In March 2012, it was announced that Alvarado would be barred from the national team for five months after leaving the team before a friendly match against Spain without communicating with the staff.
He pulled himself out of contention for the 2014 FIFA World Cup due to apparent disagreements with national team manager Jorge Luis Pinto. Alvarado was named to a provisional 26-man squad for the FIFA World Cup. Alvarado was named to the CONCACAF Gold Cup squad and took the place of injured first-choice goalkeeper Keylor Navas.
2010-11 season
In 2010, the younger Costa Rican goalkeeper signed a five-year contract in the Netherlands. Alvarado remained a backup goalkeeper for AZ Alkmaar, but after the injury to Romeo, Alvarado made his AZ debut, which turned out to be disastrous. He conceded four goals. It was a 4-0 loss. From then on, Alvarado continued to be the first-choice goalkeeper, albeit temporarily. He made six appearances for the club in the 2010-11 season, including a clean sheet in a match against Heerenveen.
2011-12 season
Alvarado was given the number 34 shirt. After Sergio Romero left for Sampdoria and Joey Didulica unexpectedly retired, Alvarado took over as AZ’s first-choice goalkeeper. His spectacular performances led to supporters voting and awarding him the club’s player of the month.
Alvarado made thirty-four appearances and earned fifteen clean sheets in the 2011–12 season. He was also named Goal.com’s Eredivisie Team of the Season.
2012-13 season
Alvarado was given the number one shirt. He made his first appearance of the season in a 2–2 draw against Ajax in the opening game of the season. In both games against Anzhi Makhachkala in the playoffs, Alvarado was in goal, as they proved to be too strong and failed to win either leg, losing 1–0 and 5-0, respectively.
Later in this season, he was the ever-present goalkeeper, making thirty-four appearances in 3060 minutes as well as earning five clean sheets. Despite this, Alvarado was in goal for the KNVB Cup final, as AZ beat PSV 2–1, making this Alvarado’s first achievement at AZ Alkmaar.
2013-14 season
In this season, Alvarado hinted that he may leave the club in an effort for new challenges. Despite this, he made his first appearance of the season, in a 3–2 loss against Ajax. Two weeks later he helped the club gain their revenge against Ajax when AZ beat them by 3–2. Alvarado was the ever-present goalkeeper, appearing in 34 games, including the playoffs, in which AZ lost 3-0 on aggregate to Groningen.
2014–15 season
During this season, Alvarado continued to be the first-choice goalkeeper until he suffered a knee injury that kept him out for months. He spent two months on the sidelines. Alvarado has been featured as a first-choice goalkeeper since his return for the rest of the season. For the first time in his AZ career, he made fewer than thirty appearances, as he made twenty-six appearances in the 2014–15 season.
Alvarado’s contract was set to expire at the end of the 2014-15 season, and he was expected to be replaced by freshly signed Uruguayan Sergio Rochet. Alvarado helped the club finish third after making his final appearance against Excelsior in the final game of the season. Alvarado was a fan favourite at AZ during his tenure there.
Trabzonspor
After leaving Arizona, Alvarado joined Trabzonspor. The contract between Trabzonspor and Alvarado was terminated on December 20th, 2018. Following his departure, he agreed to join Costa Rican outfit Liga Deportiva Alajuelense; however, the move was not completed due to licensing issues, for which Trabzonspor received a caution from FIFA to sort out the issue.
Injury
In May 2014, he was named in a provisional 26-man squad in the FIFA World Cup. By the end of May, Alvarado was not named in the 23 men’s squad & to continuous disagreement with national team manager Pinto. After Pinto’s departure as manager of Costa, he returned to the national football team under the new management of Paulo Wanchope. In the CONCACAF Gold Cup, he was included in the squad and replaced Keylor Navas as a first-choice goalkeeper after his injury.
